Lot 151
Vintage Dollhouse and Stable, Circa 1915-1920
This half timbered style English-made country house comes complete with stable. The measurements of this imposing dollhouse are 45 ½ inches high, 60 inches wide and 23 ¼ inches deep. The Hosmer House is a large white two storied dollhouse with eight interior spaces tucked under a peaked shingled roof with a prominent double chimney perched in the center of the roof. The roof is further enhanced by three gables, decorative pendants and carved openwork barge boards. The dark timber accents against the white walls is visually striking. The configuration of the dollhouse involves a large center section flanked by two smaller recessed wings. A flat panel that covers the center of the dollhouse is lifted off entirely to reveal the interior while hinged doors swing open to reveal the inside of each wing. There are seven glazed front windows each of which is partitioned into eight sections. The entry door is positioned in the facade of the right wing. The right wing contains the entrance hall on the first level. A beautifully executed staircase connects the first and second levels. The wide staircase ascends to a landing, turns ninety degrees and continues to the second floor hallway. The hand-made needle point carpet of the entrance is the first of six original carpets found in the dollhouse. The rugs are coordinated with the wallpaper in the individual rooms, i.e., a motif from and the colors of the wallpaper were used in the design of the individual carpets. Another feature of the dollhouse are its original lace curtains and velvet parterres that enhance the formal parlor and dining room. The white curtains have some discoloration and could do with laundering. The second floor contains a bathroom (mix of old and new fixtures), two bedrooms and a third room which was fitted out as a library. The wallpaper of the bedrooms clearly indicates that one was the master bedroom and the other was the children’s bedroom. In the library which rests against the left sidewall of the house, there is evidence of an abortive attempt to open up the side wall-for an additional window perhaps. The project was never completed (an oil painting of a street scene in Cape May which I used to hide the scarred wall will remain with the dollhouse). The first floor rooms from left to right are the kitchen, dining room, parlor and entrance hall. In the parlor, a succession of marks above the picture/plate rail suggest that plates were once attached to the wall. These marks are now covered by a 1920s tobacco cards (Irish castles and coats of arms) in individual wooden frames. I found the cards and my husband made the frames. These will remain with the house. The parlor has a bay window, elaborate fireplace and mantle and fretwork accenting the bay window and the doorway between dinging room and parlor. The parlor is approximately 20 inches deep, 15 inches wide and 14 inches high. The dollhouse has been discreetly electrified. A lovely beaded wall mounted light fixture was added to the entrance hall and this vintage fixture will remain with the dollhouse. The construction of the stable, which is 23 inches high, 22 ¾ inches wide and 12 ½ inches deep, mimics the half-timbered style of the main dollhouse. The stable is two stories. The first level is open and reveals two stalls. A removable front panel gives access to the second level which appears to have been a “living” area probably for stable hands or groomsmen. First and second levels are connected by a stairway.

Lot 152
American-made Dollhouse
This very large dollhouse (it stand 60 ½ inches high, 67 inches wide and 29 inches deep) is a replica of the historic Spicer Leaming House situated at 664 Hughes Street in Cape May, New Jersey. The exterior of the dollhouse (pink clapboards, gray/blue shutters and white trim) exactly matches the colors of the Spicer Leaming House which, some years ago, was features in ads for MAB paint in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine and the Ladies Home Journal. The Spicer Leaming House is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival style as found in Victorian residential buildings. The house was noted for its distinctive balustrades and the dove design on the barge boards of the central gable. These features have been replicated on the dollhouse. The interior of the dollhouse is divided into four rooms (two rooms on each of two levels) and a third floor attic which spans the full width of the house. The interior configuration does not reflect the interior of the original Spicer Leaming House. The structure was designed for play. The rooms were furnished as a parlor, bedroom, kitchen and sewing room. A house of this size with rooms to match accommodates large scale furniture beautifully. The walls are papered and/or painted in colors appropriate to a Victorian era home. There are plain unpainted plywood floors. Cardboard cut to fit and covered with cloth was fashioned for each room. The house is lighted to give a better view of the interior. Access is gained through the open back. Weather conditions at the sea shore take a toll on real houses but not so for this dollhouse. It’s exterior paint is intact and it is in very good condition overall.

Lot 173
Vintage American Dollhouse, Circa 1900
This circa 1900 American made dollhouse measures 42 inches high, 36 inches wide and 26 inches deep. The architectural style of the dollhouse, defined by its two prominent turrets, imposing chimneys and wrap-around porch is appropriately termed Queen Anne. Although the configuration of the windows suggests a third floor, the dollhouse has only two levels. The interior is unfinished; each level is a large open space. Access to the inside is gained through the back. A panel is removed from the side of the porch and the back wall of each level slides out completely giving full and easy access to the interior. The dollhouse has 36 windows, two front doors and two rear doors. The uppermost windows have interesting patterned glass. When purchased, the dollhouse was painted entirely green and white-the predominant colors for American houses in the 1930s and 40s. However, remnants of the original wine, gold and gray colors were visible and the dollhouse was repainted in these colors. Except for paint, the rough textured exterior walls of the dollhouse were left in their original condition. A missing metal turret and the outer most portion of the circular porch roof were replaced. The lower portion of houses of this style and vintage would have been enclosed; lattice of some kind was often used. For this reason, skirting was added around the base of the dollhouse to give the impression of wood lattice. The photo of the dollhouse shows figures on the porch. In fact, there is a blushing bride, nervous groom and the minister in his robes. Netting and orange blossoms adorn the porch. These figures and accessories are not included.

Lot 174
German Red Roof Dollhouse, Circa 1956
A German Red Roof dollhouse produced in 1956 by the firm of Herbert Donalek. This dollhouse is pictured in Cieslik and Kohler’s Lexikon der Puppenstuben und Puppenhauser (Dictionary of Dollhouse Rooms and Dollhouses). The dollhouse is 32 ¾ inches high, 29 inches wide and 17 ¼ inches deep (dollhouse including projecting side yard; 14 inches deep for the dollhouse alone). The dollhouse continues the German style of dollhouses with a red roof and yellow walls. However, particular features of this dollhouse give it a distinctly modern look, e.g., sliding glass windows, the doors and balustrades, the second story open patio, and striped cloth awning. The side yard, set up for a cook out with a grill and picnic table, is enclosed by a wood fence with a swing. The inside of the dollhouse has four rooms on three levels. The first floor contains a kitchen and living room. The second floor has the master bedroom and a child’s bedroom is nestled under the roof. A detachable stairway connects the first and seconds floors. The interior is entirely papered and is wired for electricity. A few pieces of the furniture that originally came with the dollhouse (including a wardrobe, credenza and night table) are still in the dollhouse. Furniture and accessories reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s was added. A bit of whimsey has also been added to the dollhouse. Dorothy, from the Wizard of Oz, is peering out from the second floor porch while the Straw Man relaxes in the living room. They are waiting for the Lion Man and the Tin Man. The furniture, accessories and figures are being sold with the dollhouse.

Two vintage figures of Victorian Ladies created from cloth and paper. The paper face of each figure is mounted on a fully clothed figure made from silk, satin, lace and ribbons. The figures, especially the fabrics, are very fragile. There is some tearing and splitting in the delicate material of the skirts of each figure.
