Joseph Sacks studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Anshutz, William Merritt Chase and William Kendall. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Art Alliance. He later lived and painted in California where some now claim him to be a "California Artist".
