Walter Emerson Baum (American 1884-1986) "RIVER WITH BARN" oil on board signed "W E Baum" lower left 12 x 14in. Walter Emerson Baum began his art studies under the direction of William T. Trego and later under Daniel Garber and Thomas Eakin's teacher Thomas Anschutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1921, Baum began teaching art, and founded the Baum School in Allentown. Baum also co-founded and supported the Lehigh Art Alliance in the 1930s. Baum was born in Sellersville Pennsylvania and was a life long resident of Bucks County, he holds the special distinction of serving as Director at the Allentown Museum of Art. He was art critic for the "Philadelphia Bulletin" where he wrote over 500 reviews. Baum was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Philadelphia Water Color Club. His work forms part of important collections such as the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, the Toledo (Ohio) Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Reading (Pennsylvania) Museum and Art Gallery
