Lot 77 Nicola Simbari (Italian 20th century) "UNDER PALMS" oil on canvas signed "Simbari" lower right 48 x 36in. The Italian artist Nicola Simbari was born in San Lucida, Italy and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He exhibited in London in 1958 and painted a mural for the World's Fair in Bruxelles. His paintings which are semi-abstract, always utilize bright and fresh colors. He received the Gold medal for his work in 1954.

Lot 78 Attributed to Frank Reed Whiteside (American 1866-1929) ZUNI GARDEN oil on canvas, partial signature, lower left 11 x 14in. A native of Philadelphia, Frank Reed Whiteside studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris with Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. Whiteside taught art in public and private schools including the Pennsylvania Academy. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Philadelphia Water Color Club, the Philadelphia Art Alliance and a fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He traveled extensively through the southwest where he lived for a period with the Zuni Indians. Many of his paintings portray the culture, lifestyle and ceremonies of the Zuni, Apache, and Pueblo Indians A memorial exhibition of Whiteside's work was held at the Philadelphia Sketch Club in 1929 and a retrospective at the Phoenix (Arizona) Art Museum in 1971.

Lot 86 Granville Seymour Redmond (American 1871-1935) "AFTERNOON STUDY" oil on canvas signed and dated "Granville Redmond 1917" 11 x 14in. signed and inscribed $40 Afternoon Study Granville Redmond 1917 verso. Granville Redmond is considered one of the finest of the California Impressionist painters. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Deaf from the age of 2 ½ Redmond never learned to speak He received his artist training at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco and the Academy Julian in Paris with Benjamin Constant (1845-1902) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He was personal pantomime coach to Charlie Chaplin, who collected his works. Redmond was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the California Art Club, the Laguna Beach Art Association and the Bohemian Club. He exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association and the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle. Redmond won medals at the California School of Design (1891), the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904) and the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle (1909)

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Ramon Lombarte attended the Massana School of Fine Arts in his native city, where fellow Spaniards Picasso and Miro were at one time students. Lombarte specializes in studies of woman, most often solitary, in the intimacy of their own world, creating a sensual and reflective mood. In his series "At the Ritz", Lombarte focuses on a woman inside a room at the Ritz Hotel in Barcelona.

Lot 100 Ferdinand Kaufman (American 1864-1942) PASADENA oil on canvas signed "Ferdinand Kaufman" lower right 25 x 40in. "Early morning San Gabriel Mountains Pasadena, Ca" inscribed verso. Kaufmann studied in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), Benjamin Constant (1845-1902) and William Adolphe Bougereau (1825-1905). He was a member of the American Art Association, the North Shore Association and the Laguna Beach Art Association although he was born in Oberhausen, Germany. Kaufman exhibited and won prizes at the Pasadena Art Institute (1929) and the California State Fair in Sacramento (1935, 1939). His work is included in the collection of the Municipal Art Gallery in Davenport, Iowa.
